A pharmaceutical company has been accused of illegally promoting male-enhancement drugs to patients in the United States. In July, a US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel voted 18-6 to recommend that Pfizer and the company's marketing partner, Eli Lilly and Co. promote the products, including Viagra, in the United States.
The FDA said the drug maker had submitted four studies in the US in the last six months of 2009 to test the effectiveness of the drug's erectile dysfunction drug, Sildenafil, and to determine whether it would be effective for women. But the agency said it did not test the drug for men and instead only tested it for female sexual function, a claim that had not been made public. The agency has not said how the FDA approved the drug for women. Pfizer also said it was not aware of the potential risks of the drug's use in women. The drug is marketed as an over-the-counter supplement, Viagra, which is sold by other companies as Addyi, the FDA advisory panel said.
The FDA said it would continue to monitor the company's activities in the US. The company has not commented on the FDA's decision. In December, it was said to be in discussions with the Food and Drug Administration to develop a more comprehensive approach to treating female sexual dysfunction.
